When Stewart Carlin began his career with Alco Management, it was the turn of the century. At the time, he was earning his MBA at the University of Memphis and joined the team as a financial analyst.<\/p>\n
"I had no real estate experience, but founder Frank Jemison said he could teach me," Stewart recalls. "I had a general business background and just fell into it."<\/p>\n
One particular deal became a defining moment in Alco’s growth. Although Stewart had never envisioned a career in affordable housing, the right opportunity presented itself.<\/p>\n
"When we acquired the Hardaway Portfolio from a developer in Nashville, it doubled our size," he says. "We took over management and then purchased almost everything."<\/p>\n
Back then, the company was relatively small, managing around 25 properties with about 20 staff members in the corporate office. Stewart credits Frank Jemison with shaping his understanding of the business.<\/p>\n
"He blew me away with the deals he was making," Stewart says. "His memory was incredible."<\/p>\n
Looking back on the past 25 years, Stewart is proud of the company’s steady growth. He attributes Alco’s success to a thoughtful and conservative approach to business that has kept the company strong.<\/p>\n
"We have a great team in place, and our development department has grown by leaps and bounds," he says. I have never felt like just a number here. It is a family business, and I feel like part of that family every day."<\/p>\n
At its core, Alco Management has always prioritized a strong, people-centered culture.<\/p>\n
