What’s Happening Lately at ALCO

  |     |   News

With the unusual year that was 2020 now behind us, we’d like to take a moment to share some of the happenings at ALCO Management. Of course, 2020’s theme was adjusting in order to overcome the pandemic challenges together … a theme featured prominently in two of the most exciting areas of our company’s experience this year.

Office Renovation Completed, and Featured in the Daily Memphian

We were thrilled to learn Wayne Risher of the Daily Memphian planned to write a news story about our headquarters renovation. Interestingly, the renovation that began in 2019 wrapped up in the height of the pandemic. This means many of our employees haven’t even had a chance to work in their new space yet. That’s very “on-brand” for 2020!

Below, we’ve shared a few excerpts from Wayne’s article, which appeared in the Daily Memphian’s December 6th edition. If you have the chance, check out the full article, “River views beckon, when office workers return,” here.

On the third floor awaits an airy, spacious office setting filled with natural light and open to views of the riverfront and Downtown Memphis’s historic Cotton Row neighborhood.

ALCO managers believe their office expansion has democratized the workplace by taking away executives’ corner offices and giving expansive views to pretty much everyone else. …

A blue stairwell installation called “The Making of a Home” consists of a wall filled with discarded tools. It was a collaboration between Parker Design Studio, the design team leader, and art consultant Anna Wunderlich. An installation of keys on the second floor, called “Making Waves,” was created by Sarah Crawford.

Please join us in wishing Wayne a happy retirement, which happened at the end of 2020!

We’re looking forward to bringing our staff back together at our headquarters as soon as it’s safe, and inviting you to experience our new space, too.

Partnership with Neighborhood Christian Center Expands

In addition to our own renovation, some of our apartment communities have also experienced their own renewal. For example, Chickasaw Place Apartments and Robinhood Park Apartments, both in Memphis, are nearing the end of their renovations. Several other community renovations are beginning across Tennessee as well as one in Alabama.

These renovations are made to extend the life of properties many families and individuals rely on for safe, comfortable, modern space they can call home. More than ever, affordable housing is a crucial issue for our country.

One of the greatest benefits of renovating is we’re able to create larger, dedicated space for our nonprofit partners. In Memphis, that partner is Neighborhood Christian Center (NCC). NCC has a long track record of delivering social and human services to neighbors in need. The expanded space that’s been designated for NCC at the Chickasaw Place and Robinhood Park communities have made these services even more accessible to the community, including:

  • Clothing drives
  • Food banks
  • GED preparation
  • Wellness checks
  • Virtual learning support for families with children whose schools are online during the pandemic

Though Alco and NCC have been longtime partners, our community renovations have allowed us to activate on-site space specifically for NCC’s service delivery and events. We’re grateful to NCC for extending important services to our apartment communities, and we look forward to expanding this partnership even more, particularly as pandemic-related restrictions begin to ease next year.

As additional renovations take place in our other apartment communities, we envision following the model set by NCC in Memphis and helping even more tenants have access to the support services they may seek.
